MUSD Equity Statement
The McKinleyville Union Elementary School District (MUSD) stands in unity against systemic racism, oppression, and prejudice against black, indigenous, and other people of color. The murder of George Floyd has brought recent attention to the disproportionate violence and oppression against people of color, and reminds us that our black and brown communities have been under seige for over 400 years, right here in America. We send love and comfort to the families of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, Josiah Lawson, and so many more.
MUSD’s administrative team is committed to working towards creating a more welcoming, inclusive, racist free, and bias minimized school district. It begins with us, the educators in partnership with you, our families, and our community. We at MUSD, are committed to creating systemic changes, starting here in our schools. We believe that we must do more than suggest moving towards equity and inclusion, rather, must create a safe and welcoming environment for ALL of our students including our black, indiginous, other people of color, LGBTQ+, and people with disabilities, who are all an integral part of the fabric of our community.
At MUSD we are promising to take the following steps to improve the educational experience for ALL of our students and ensure an inclusive school environment:
- We will continue the process of conducting equity audits of our curricula. This will ensure all of our students are represented and that true and accurate history is reflected and taught to our students.
- We will continue to train our teachers, administrators, and all staff in issues of equity, bias, and inclusion.
- We will stand by and strengthen our anti-discrimination and anti-harassment policies.
- We will examine our hiring practices and job descriptions, to ensure equitable hiring practices.
- We will support families with information and resources associated with combating systemic and pervasive racism.
MUSD is officially on record as saying, we have a moral imperative to work harder...to try harder...to be better, but we need every one of you alongside us. Thank you for entrusting your children to our educational care. We love and care for EVERY child we serve. We will work hard to protect them, to educate them, and to help them grow.
In solidarity to eradicate hate and racism,
Your MUSD Administrative Team
