Self Care:

Color Hunt. Pick a color (maybe your favorite color). Spend 10 minutes s-l-o-w-l-y walking around your house finding and counting items that are your color. Focusing on a physical/mental task helps to reset and calm our brain.

Self Care:

Mindful smelling. Ask your adult to help you find something with a smell you like (eg. cinnamon, perfume, soap). Take a few minutes to enjoy that smell and think about what feelings/memories it brings up. How is mindful smelling different from the smelling you do automatically? Can smells make you more calm?

Self Care:

Sing out loud. Everyone knows the sweet relief associated with rocking out to your favorite tune. The physical act of singing out loud, even if it is off key, has been shown to release endorphins, the “feel good” chemical in the brain. Disney or favorite pop songs are always good choices!

Self Care:

Take a quick cold (or cool) shower. Cold showers have been proven to reduce inflammation in the muscles, improve flow back to the heart, and boost your mood. One study of cold water swimmers found that tension, fatigue, and negative moods all decreased with plunges into cold water.

Self Care:

Squish something. When you play with putty or other squishy substances it is actually good for your brain! It has been proven to reroute electrical impulses and help them to fire away from the areas associated with stress. Here are a few homemade recipes if you don’t have any at home.

Self Care:

Have a cozy drink. Drinking a warm drink makes your body feel warm, almost like a hug from the inside. Ask your adult to help you make a warm drink (hot chocolate or warmed milk with a splash of vanilla or herbal tea with honey). Sip your warm drink alone outside or while looking out your window.

Self Care:

Crinkle tissue paper or pop bubble wrap. Not only does crinkling tissue paper or popping bubble wrap provide a satisfying noise, the textural changes in your hand sends sensory feedback to the brain in a pathway away from those associated with stress.

Self Care:

Roll a small ball under your feet. Rolling a small ball (golf ball sized) under your feet not only improves circulation, but hits pressure points that relieve stress and relax the muscles of the feet and legs. Roll the entire sole of your foot using various pressures for maximum benefit.

Self Care:

Count backwards from 100 slowly. Not only does counting give you a chance to focus on something other than what is on your mind, counting backwards offers an added concentration challenge.

Self Care:

Decorate a wall. Ask your adult if there is a wall you can temporarily decorate (if not, find a BIG piece of cardboard). Use painter’s tape and pictures from magazines or printed out to make a HUGE art piece.

Self Care- Sound hunt. Go outside near your front or back door, close your eyes & listen. How many sounds do you hear? Count them on your fingers.

Self Care- Dance party. Ask your adult if you can blast your favorite song and have a quick dance party. See how many people (or pets) you can include in your house!

Self Care- Fun feet. Ask your adult to borrow a BIG kitchen bowl and a towel. Soak your feet in warm water and sit still for 5 minutes. Fun additions: vinegar (helps with stinky feet), epsom salts, or essential oils.

Self Care- Go upside down. For centuries, Yogis have understood the calming power of bringing the head below the level of the heart. Bend over and touch your toes, or practice a headstand. Inverting the body has a restorative effect on the nervous system, which controls the body’s response to stress.

Self Care-  Blow bubbles. Just like blowing on a pinwheel, blowing bubbles can help you gain control of your breathing. Bonus: Running around popping bubbles is just as fun as blowing them. Recipe for dish soap bubbles and bubble wands.
