This week we are going to learn about fairytales from around the world and learn about the places they came from.

Monday

Tuesday

Wednesday

Thursday

Friday

The Cinderella fairy tale has been retold all around the world but the most popular versions of the story was written by Charles Perrault in 1697 in France.

The Funny Little Woman: This is a fairytale from Japan.

There was once a little woman who loved to laugh and make dumplings out of rice. One day, she follows a wayward dumpling on a journey where she meets wise Jizo and hungry and wicked Oni. Will the little woman be able to escape, or will she become the Oni’s personal dumpling cook? This is a fairytale from Japan

Tim O’Toole and the Wee Folk-Tim-- O’Toole and his wife, Kathleen, are so poor that they don’t even have a potato or penny between them! Even the mice who live in their house are too thin for the cats to chase them. When Tim goes out to find a job in the hopes that he can change his family’s sad state, he encounters “the wee folk,” leprechauns who give him a wealth of gifts. Has Tim’s life changed for the better or are there more struggles ahead? This fairytale is from Ireland

The Talking Eggs- This tale was likely brought to Louisiana by people who left France to come to the U.S.

Sweet Blanche lives with her ill-tempered mother and Rose, her sharp-tongued sister, on a poor farm in the U.S. South. One day, Blanche meets an old woman who rewards her kindness with gifts. A jealous Rose sets off to get her share, but she ends up being taught a serious lesson instead. The Talking Eggs features themes from popular European fairy tales.

Strega Nona- Strega Nona – “Grandma Witch” – is the source for potions, cures, magic and comfort in her town. Her magical ever-full pasta pot is especially intriguing to hungry Big Anthony. He is supposed to look after her house and tend her garden, but one day, when she goes over the mountain to visit Strega Amelia, Big Anthony recites the magic verse over the pasta pot, with disastrous results. This fairy tale is from Italy.

Writing

Cinderella gives her two stepsisters a home in the palace even though they were mean to her when she lived with them.

Write 1-2 sentences about why you think she did this?

Writing

The Funny Little Women’s dumpling leads her on a grand adventure! Where would you want to go on an adventure?

Write 1-2 sentences about where you would want to go.

Writing

The Wee Folk kept giving Tim gifts but the McGoons kept taking them. How does Tim outsmart the McGoons in the end?

Write 1-2 sentences about it.

Writing

Would you take the plain eggs or the gold and silver eggs from the hen house?

Write 1-2 sentences about it.

Writing

What was Big Anthony’s punishment for touching Strega Nona’s pasta pot?

Write 1-2 sentences about it.

Math Fun - In the USA we have 2 sets of 12 hours on our clocks. In Cinderella’s story she had to leave the dance before 12 midnight.

Count up from 1-12 and backwards from 12-1.  Write down these numbers in forward and backwards order.   Add 12 + 12. How many hours are in one day? (24) Count up to that number (24) starting at 0.  Write the numbers 13-24 and practice saying them in order.

How many tens are in that number (24 has 2 tens) ?  How many ones (24 has 4 ones)? Draw a picture showing the tens and ones for 24.  Two sets of ten ones (10 + 10) , and four singles showing 4 ones.

For a reference parents, here is a short video showing samples of how to do tens and ones as well as counting and writing the teen numbers:

Math Fun-

Have your child complete word problems (addition and subtraction with numbers 0-10), using paper representations of dumplings (cut out circles from paper and have your child crumple them to look like dumplings.).

Example word problem: The little woman makes 5 dumplings for the oni’s dinner. They eat 4 and she saves the rest. How many does she have now?

The next day, she makes 3 more dumplings and serves them with the leftovers from the night before. How many dumplings does the little woman serve on the second night?

Math Fun- Do some of the math worksheets from your packet

Make up some word problems with eggs.

Example:

Tim O’Toole’s goose laid 4 eggs this week and 3 eggs last week.  How many eggs did the goose lay in those 2 weeks? (4+3=_)

Make up 3 different egg addition problems.  Write them down.

(See tomorrow’s math lesson for more examples.)

Math Fun-

Have your child complete word problems (addition and subtraction with numbers 0-10), using paper representations of eggs (have your child crumple them to look like eggs some white and some gold or silver.).

Example word problem: Blanche takes 7 regular eggs from the old woman’s chicken house. Then she throws 6 eggs over her shoulder. How many eggs does she have now?

Rose takes 10 golden or silver eggs. She throws 4 eggs over her shoulder.  How many eggs are left?

Math Fun - In the story Strega Nona’s pot keeps making more and more pasta.

If you have 1 piece of pasta and you add 1 how many would you have? (1+1=_)

if you have 1 piece of pasta and you add 2 how many would you have? (1+2=_)

If you have 1 piece of pasta and you add 3 how many would you have (1+3=_)

Continue on for:

1+4=_; 1+5=_; 1+6=_; 1+7=_; 1+8=_; 1+9=_; 1+10=_; 1+11=_; 1+12=_; 1+13=_; 1+14=_; 1+15=_; 1+16=_; 1+17=_; 1+18=_; 1+19=_

Write them all down on paper.

Draw pictures to show these values.

Bonus Math:

If you have 1 piece of pasta and it doubles what would you have? (1+1= ?)

If you have 2 pieces of pasta and they double what would you have? (2+2=?)

Try these other doublings of numbers….

3+3=_      4+4=_ 5+5=_      6+6=_ 7+7=_ 8+8=_     9+9=_ 10+10=_

Write them all down on paper.

Draw pictures to show these values.

Self Care== Talk about different ways to be kind...Practice one of those ideas today and practice other ways of being kind in the days to come.

Self Care-- Take a rest.  Imagine going on a great adventure like The Funny Little Woman.  Where would you go and what would you see and do there?

Self Care-- Take some resting time.  Imagine a special place you like to go.  What would you do there in that special place today?  Who would be there with you? How do you feel there? What about this place is special?

Self Care-- Take some rest time for 20-30 minutes.  Practice taking 10 nice, deep breaths

Self Care--Take a rest and imagine you could have a pot that would cook anything you like.  What would your pot cook? Who would you share the food with? Would you like the pot to cook different foods every day or the same food?

Science--

While there’s no such thing as magic that turns a raggedy dress into a fancy ball gown, temperature can perform a type of magic: changing the state of matter, from solid to liquid to gas.

Social Studies-- Sometimes in Japan people like to eat food that is

separated into little compartmentalized boxes called “Bento Boxes”.  Can you design a Bento Box of foods you would like to eat? You can draw it on paper with crayons and markers or create it with colored construction paper

See attached image below:

Science--Water Play

Pretend you are cooking dumplings in a big pot of water.  What else can you pretend to cook?

Science--

Eggs come from all oviparous animals (birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish--as well as 2 mammals-- the platypus and echidna).  Make a list of 5 different animals you know of that lay eggs.  Draw a picture of one other animal that lays eggs and what their eggs look like.
